In Illinois, 95% of the state's incorporated communities are classified as small (population less than 25,000), with approximately one-third of the state's citizens (3.6 million of 11.2 million) residing in these small communities. The objective of this survey was to obtain information on the status and needs of programs for managing public shade and street trees in the small communities of Illinois. The survey was sent to the chief elected officials of all 1212 incorporated Illinois communities with populations less than 25,000. In almost half of the responding communities, it was the chief local elected official, either the mayor or the village board president, who took the time to respond to the survey. The next most likely respondents were the city/village clerk (10%) followed closely by the public works director (9%). Completed surveys were returned from 579 communities, for a response rate of 48 percent.
