“No other modern country gives corporations the unfettered power found in America to gouge customers, shortchange workers, and erect barriers to fair play. A big reason is that so little of the news . . . addresses the private, government-approved mechanisms by which price gouging is employed to redistribute income upward.” You are being systematically exploited by powerful corporations every day. These companies squeeze their trusting customers for every last cent, risk their retirement funds, and endanger their lives. And they do it all legally. How? It’s all in the fine print. David Cay Johnston, the bestselling author of Perfectly Legal and Free Lunch, is famous for exposing the perfidies of our biggest institutions. Now he turns his attention to the ways huge corporations hide sneaky stipulations in just about every contract, often with government permission. Johnston has been known to whip out a utility bill and explain line by line what all that mumbo jumbo actually means (and it doesn’t mean anything good, unless you happen to be the utility company). Within all that jargon, disclosed in accordance with all legal requirements, lie the tools these companies use to rob you blind. Even worse is what’s missing—all the contractually binding clauses that companies hide elsewhere yet still enforce and abuse. Consider, for example, how: An insurance company repeatedly delayed paying for a paralyzed man’s vital care despite court orders to pay up. Laws in nineteen states let companies like Goldman Sachs, General Electric, and Procter & Gamble pocket the state income taxes withheld from their workers’ paychecks for up to twenty-five years. A little-known government rule gives safety waivers to deadly industrial facilities secretly located underneath schools and playgrounds. The “FCC Charge” on your phone bill, which appears to be a government fee, actually goes straight to the phone company. Johnston shares solutions you can use to fight back against the hundreds of obscure fees and taxes that line the pockets of big corporations, and to help end these devious practices once and for all.

Although he is credited with changing history through his invention of printing, Johann Gutenberg remains mysterious. In Fine Print, author Joann Johansen Burch pieces together Gutenberg's amazing story. When Johann was a child in the early 1400s, books were rare and sometimes very expensive. Each book had to be copied by hand, letter by letter. Gutenberg loved to read, and he often grew impatient waiting for the time-consuming bookmaking process to be completed. Young Gutenberg dreamed of finding a better way to make books. From his childhood in strife-torn Mainz through the many years of setbacks and bankruptcies, Gutenberg persevered in his belief that books could be made quickly and inexpensively. This is the story of the man who invented movable type and the printing press and gave the world the gift of books.

Boilerplate Book PDF/Epub Download

Why the increasing use of boilerplate is eroding our rights Boilerplate—the fine-print terms and conditions that we become subject to when we click "I agree" online, rent an apartment, enter an employment contract, sign up for a cellphone carrier, or buy travel tickets—pervades all aspects of our modern lives. On a daily basis, most of us accept boilerplate provisions without realizing that should a dispute arise about a purchased good or service, the nonnegotiable boilerplate terms can deprive us of our right to jury trial and relieve providers of responsibility for harm. Boilerplate is the first comprehensive treatment of the problems posed by the increasing use of these terms, demonstrating how their use has degraded traditional notions of consent, agreement, and contract, and sacrificed core rights whose loss threatens the democratic order. Margaret Jane Radin examines attempts to justify the use of boilerplate provisions by claiming either that recipients freely consent to them or that economic efficiency demands them, and she finds these justifications wanting. She argues, moreover, that our courts, legislatures, and regulatory agencies have fallen short in their evaluation and oversight of the use of boilerplate clauses. To improve legal evaluation of boilerplate, Radin offers a new analytical framework, one that takes into account the nature of the rights affected, the quality of the recipient's consent, and the extent of the use of these terms. Radin goes on to offer possibilities for new methods of boilerplate evaluation and control, among them the bold suggestion that tort law rather than contract law provides a preferable analysis for some boilerplate schemes. She concludes by discussing positive steps that NGOs, legislators, regulators, courts, and scholars could take to bring about better practices.

Big Chief Harrison and the Mardi Gras Indians Book PDF/Epub Download

Big Chief of the Guardian of the Flames, philosopher, family man, and advocate for education, Donald Harrison took center stage in life. He demanded a well-deserved respect from his peers. An African American pushing through the Depression and the Civil Rights movement, he educated himself by reading scores of books while developing an acute understanding of philosophy and a love for jazz music. Out of a desire to give back to his community, Harrison and his wife, Herreast, founded the Guardians Institute, a cultural arts center for New Orleans youths. Born in 1937, Donald Harrison quickly immersed himself into the culture of the Mardi Gras Indians despite his father's disapproval. He served a brief stint in the U.S. Army and returned to New Orleans to start a family, work a series of odd jobs, and pursue his education. Harrison continued to mask as an Indian and endorse literacy programs until his death in 1998. This revealing biography presents a peek into the life of a remarkable man and chronicles his journey to become the Big Chief of an internationally recognized Mardi Gras Indian tribe and a staunch supporter of education. Based on more than seventy interviews with friends, family, and such notable musicians as Clyde Kerr, Jr., this biography exposes the man and complex mind beneath the colorful plumes. This illuminating book, which also provides insight into the secretive world of the Mardi Gras Indians, will captivate jazz aficionados, New Orleanians, and those who simply love the city.

Just as the commercial market is full of lofty promises and glossed over particulars, so it is with the marketplace of ideas. Too often the church itself resorts to catchphrases and slogans, to elementary truths over spiritually mature ones, to rhetoric over reason, and concise responses instead of complete answers. The danger of this is that the church may become nothing more than a peddler of platitudes and its followers may become disillusioned. This book aims to help uncover the real deal behind common Christian bywords, and the real truth underlining prevalent Christian truisms, in the hope that we might know God better, and discover the richness and fullness that is in Christianity.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The telephone company executives Adam Leipzig met with told him that their corporate strategy was to charge at least $100 a month from each client household within a few years. This is exactly what happened. #2 In the 1980s, politicians and pundits said that the cost of telephone service would fall thanks to competition. But in the last decade of the twentieth century, even after adjusting for inflation, telephone costs grew fourfold. #3 The publicly switched telephone network, as it was known in the industry, was upgraded for emergency calls to 911. Then it was upgraded again with ANI so that emergency dispatch centers would know the numbers of callers. The cost of ALI was justified, as it saved the lives of many people in the midst of medical emergencies or assaults. #4 The cost of having a phone line installed in your home or business is now separate from the cost of using that line. Customers must pay to fix any wires inside their homes or businesses that get wet or gnawed by rodents.

In the second half of the 20th century, print journalism found its Golden Age. Jack Schwartz was one of the unsung participants, mainly as an editor who polished copy and helped shape coverage at some of America's most important newspapers, among them Newsday and (especially) The New York Times. He doesn't glamorize or sentimentalize but provides an unflinching, inside scoop on the ambitions and foibles of the people who molded the news they saw fit to print. Written with perspicacity and wry humor, recalling high moments and low, Schwartz's personal and professional journey memorably evokes a remarkable era and its cast of colorful characters.
