Focusing on idiophones and membranophones, it covers in detail both Western and non-Western percussive instruments. These include not only instruments whose usual sound is produced percussively (like snare drums and triangles), but those whose usual sound is produced concussively (like castanets and claves) or by friction (like the cuíca and the lion’s roar). The expertise of contributors have been used to produce a wide-ranging list of percussion topics. The volume includes: (1) an alphabetical listing of percussion instruments and terms from around the world; (2) an extensive section of illustrations of percussion instruments; (3) thirty-five articles covering topics from Basel drumming to the xylophone; (4) a list of percussion symbols; (5) a table of percussion instruments and terms in English, French, German, and Italian; and (6) an updated section of published writings on methods for percussion.

Journey through Breast Cancer Book PDF/Epub Download

Throughout the book, I have tried to emphasize how each one of these five women, although devastated initially, exhibits strong faith in herself and after developing a positive attitude with the help of professionals, does not lose it until her fight is over. These women share a strong thread of optimism throughout their journey, and try to help other women like themselves. I have described each woman’s background in detail, to make a point that cancer does not discriminate! It can develop in anyone, from any economic stratum, from any social class, rich or poor, young or old! However, to give a fierce fight to this disease, the means and measures to fight this war are the same. As such, all these five women, although suffer acutely through the initial shock and hopelessness, and even depression; develop and exhibit empowerment throughout the journey. They are ordinary, every-day women, loving their husbands and children, putting their heart and soul for the betterment of their families, some of them working hard outside their homes to provide for their families, and enjoying simple things of life. The same ordinary women, when attacked by breast cancer, refuse to be defeated by this deadly disease. They overcome their initial shock with a keen desire to fight the disease. I have shown them to be the first rate soldiers combating breast cancer with hope and self-confidence. Each woman’s journey comes to an end with a success, success defined in their own terms, of course.

Musicophilia in Mumbai Book PDF/Epub Download

In Musicophilia in Mumbai Tejaswini Niranjana traces the place of Hindustani classical music in Mumbai throughout the long twentieth century as the city moved from being a seat of British colonial power to a vibrant postcolonial metropolis. Drawing on historical archives, newspapers, oral histories, and interviews with musicians, critics, students, and instrument makers as well as her own personal experiences as a student of Hindustani classical music, Niranjana shows how the widespread love of music throughout the city created a culture of collective listening that brought together people of diverse social and linguistic backgrounds. This culture produced modern subjects Niranjana calls musicophiliacs, whose subjectivity was grounded in a social rather than an individualistic context. By attending concerts, learning instruments, and performing at home and in various urban environments, musicophiliacs embodied forms of modernity that were distinct from those found in the West. In tracing the relationship between musical practices and the formation of the social subject, Niranjana opens up new ways to think about urbanity, subjectivity, culture, and multiple modernities.

Kankana Banerjee The Journey of a Khayal Queen Book PDF/Epub Download

‘Kankana Banerjee-The Journey of a Khayal Queen’ attempts to bring to the fore the life and contributions of one of India’s most acclaimed and foremost Classical vocalists Vidushi Kankana Banerjee. As a young girl of eleven, Kankana came under the tutelage of Ustad Amir Khan and learned from him for more than fifteen years. She was later trained by Pandit Pratap Narayan of the Mewati gharana. As a performing artist, she was particularly marked by experts for her cuckoo-like voice and soulful renditions that were built on the rudiments of the Indore style of singing and carried the ethos and marrow of her Ustad. Fame and recognition were sure to come, but not easily. Life had been unsparing at times. Her land of promises froze on several occasions, leaving her torn and devastated. But her unflagging determination kept her going. Despite all odds, she could establish herself as a singer of repute; a name to reckon with. Her sundry contributions as a performing artist, a Guru, and a composer would indubitably be of interest to arbiters of music, aesthetes, students and her devotees around the globe. This book not only gives one the opportunity to know Kankana only as a songstress of rare brilliance but also allows us to peep into the artist’s unostentatious life yet worthy of attention, from close proximity.
