Tomorrow s Garden Book PDF/Epub Download

With a keen eye for aesthetics matched by a strong concern for the environment, garden expert Stephen Orr has developed a sense of what a modern garden should be: small, visually pleasing, and responsible. In Tomorrow's Garden, he presents gardens in 14 American cities that have been scaled back and simplified without sacrificing beauty or innovative design. A devoted supporter of the organic gardening movement, Orr advises gardeners to think about their gardens as part of an interconnected whole with the surrounding environment--with an eye to water usage, local ecology, and preservation of resources. However, for those who are afraid that a sustainable garden means a lack of flora and fauna, Orr believes that a garden, first and foremost, should be a thing of beauty. He encourages flower lovers to plant flowers, and he showcases gardens filled with traditional and exotic plants that are designed with both visual appeal and the environment in mind. With detailed case studies, stunning photographs, and an appendix of resources and information to help gardeners achieve their ecological best, Tomorrow's Garden will teach you the true definition of sustainability and show you how to create beauty without excess in the 21st century and beyond.

The Bee Cottage Story Book PDF/Epub Download

Inspired by Frances Schultz’s popular House Beautiful magazine series on the makeover of her East Hampton house, Bee Cottage, what began as a decorating book evolved into a memoir combining the best elements of both: beautiful photos and a compelling personal story. Schultz taps into what she learned during her renovations of Bee Cottage—determining how each area in the house and garden would be used and furnished—to unravel the question of how a mature, intelligent, successful woman could have made such a mess of her personal life. As she figures out each room over a period of years, Frances finds a new path in life, also a continual process. She comes to learn that, like decorating a home, our lives must adapt to who we are and what we need at different points along the way. The Bee Cottage Story is part memoir, part home decorating guide. Frances discusses the kinds of useful, commonsense design issues that professionals take for granted and the rest of us just may not think of, prompting the reader to examine and discover her own “truth” in decorating—and in her life.

Larchmont Boulevard is more than a street; it is the soul and spine of the surrounding neighborhoods created in the early 1900s when Los Angeles was just coming into its own. Located in the heart of Los Angeles, Larchmont Boulevard is a charming, walkable street running north and south from Third Street to Melrose Avenue that gives residents and visitors the feeling of a small town tucked inside the vast, car-centric city of Los Angeles. This book tells the story of Larchmont’s beginnings in 1921 when the Los Angeles Times reported that developers Julius La Bonte and Charles Ramson had purchased seven lots on Larchmont Boulevard to create a business district of 30 stores between First Street and Beverly Boulevard. The one-block stretch, where a trolley line once ran, is affectionately known as “the village” by locals in the surrounding neighborhoods of Brookside, Citrus Square, Country Club Heights, Fremont Place, Hancock Park, La Brea-Hancock, Larchmont Village, Melrose, Oakwood-Maplewood-St. Andrews, Ridgewood-Wilton/St. Andrews Square, Sycamore Square, Western-Wilton, Wilshire Park, Windsor Square, and Windsor Village.

GOP 3 offers preliminary excavation results from the 2006-2007 season at the Heit el-Ghurab (HeG) site of Giza and from clearing and mapping at the Khentkawes Town site. The volume includes the results of a ground-penetrating radar study by Glen Dash in the areas around the Valley Temples of Menkaure and Khafre, as well as near the Khentkawes Town. Mark Lehner's Capital Zone article discusses the geomorphological history of the Heit el-Ghurab site and the Khentkawes Town at Giza as it relates to observations and conclusions about the flood plain and Nile flood levels, with an overall emphasis on the Old Kingdom, at Dahshur, in the Memphis/Saqqara area, near Giza and in the region of Ausim and Abu Roash. Bunbury, Lutley, and Graham offer an overall view of Giza's geomorphology, and Yukinori Kawae summarizes the 2006 three-dimensional laser scanning of the Khentkawes monument.

During 2009, the Giza Plateau Mapping Project carried out excavations at two sites as part of its ongoing research program: 1) the settlement connected to the Khentkawes Monument on the Giza Plateau and 2) the nearby town, Heit el-Ghurab (aka Lost City of the Pyramids). The 2009 work yielded some important discoveries such as evidence that the 4th Dynasty Khentkawes Town was in fact occupied into the 5th Dynasty with reoccupation later, probably in the 6th Dynasty. The major discovery was the remains of a previously unknown valley complex off the east end of the Khentkawes Town made up of corridors, ramps, and stairs descending into a depression that may prove to be a harbor. This collection of papers by archaeologists and specialists details the results of the excavations and additional work carried out in 2009. The book is well illustrated with abundant maps and photographs, along with large foldout maps and isometric drawings.

Over the past decade, celebrated style maker Suzanne Rheinstein has achieved an unprecedented level of refinement and clarity. Her love of objects from the past remains a touchstone, but in her newest rooms, stylish modernity and an elegant simplicity hold sway. Presented are beautifully photographed homes of clients Suzanne Rheinstein has worked with before that reflect a vision of richness tempered by restraint. Her longtime fans will find new inspiration in these pages. Throughout, she shares her ideas of how to live in a relaxed way surrounded by artworks and personal collections. A traditional Georgian library is done in a totally untraditional lacquered green, while a San Francisco town house revamp includes a “California” room filled with Moroccan rugs and rattan chairs, and a serene retreat has a guesthouse evocative of the bohemian 1970s.

Comfort is the essential element of a successful interior and the hallmark of the Parish-Hadley style. In Sister Parish Design, Libby Cameron, Sister's last protégé, and Susan B. Crater, Sister's granddaughter, explore this aspect and much more in a series of conversations with the leading decorators of today. Sister Parish is the iconic American decorator of her generation. Her use of flowered chintzes and overstuffed armchairs combined with unexpected items, like patchwork quilts and painted furniture, is credited with popularizing what is known as American Country–style during the 1960s. Her passion for bold color and mixed patterns invoked charm, imagination, and a lived-in look to her rooms. Her philosophy was to be unafraid and to put things together because you liked them--not because they matched. Filled with beautifully-rendered watercolor illustrations, Sister Parish Design is more than just a stunning book—it is an inspirational resource that all decorating aficionados will want to add to their bookshelf.

Designer Tony Duquette’s legendary Dawnridge, located in Beverly Hills, is one of the most creatively designed private homes in America. Built in 1949 by Duquette and his wife, Elizabeth, the original structure was a modest 30 x 30 foot box. Hutton Wilkinson purchased the home following Duquette’s death in 1999, and he has since breathed new life into the estate, broadening the property, adding houses of his own design, and incorporating remarkable objects designed and created by the Duquettes. Written by Wilkinson, Tony Duquette’s Dawnridge chronicles the luxe and historic home’s transformation. The book is organized by the three main houses, and Wilkinson elaborates on the spectacular design elements in each room and shares the stories behind the spaces. Tim Street-Porter’s photographs show both the original and redesigned rooms.
