Book Summary :

“An atmospheric, multilayered, sex-positive romance.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) After an awkward first encounter, Birdie and Daniel are forced to work together in a Seattle hotel where a famous author leads a mysterious and secluded life in this romantic contemporary novel from the author of Alex, Approximately. Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she’s cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel. In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide. The hotel’s charismatic young van driver shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes the waterfront Moonlight Diner where Birdie waits for the early morning ferry after work. Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and he’s stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a famous reclusive writer—never before seen in public—might be secretly meeting someone at the hotel. To uncover the writer’s puzzling identity, Birdie must come out of her shell…discovering that the most confounding mystery of all may be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle that is Daniel.

Book Summary :

Rarely seen installation works that exemplify this pioneering artist's critical focus on Black identity and Black feminism Showcasing a lesser-known aspect of Saar's art, Betye Saar: Serious Moonlight provides new insights into her explorations of ritual, spirituality and cosmologies, as well as themes of the African diaspora. Featured here are significant installations created by Saar from 1980 to 1998, including Oasis (1984), a work that will be reconfigured at ICA Miami's Saar exhibition for the first time in more than 30 years. With compelling scholarship and rich illustration--combining new installation photography and archival material--the monograph provides a fresh look at this significant artist's critical and influential practice. Betye Saar: Serious Moonlight reinforces and celebrates Saar's standing as a visionary artist, storyteller and mythmaker, and the ongoing significance and relevance of her work to the most pressing issues in America today. Betye Saar (born 1926) is renowned for pioneering Black feminism and West Coast assemblage in her visionary artistic practice, through dense, complexly referential objects. For over six decades, Saar's work has led dialogues on race and gender, reflecting changing cultural and political contexts. Most recently, solo presentations have been hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Saar's work was prominently featured in We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85 at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and in Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power at Tate Modern, London, which traveled to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; Brooklyn Museum; The Broad, Los Angeles; and the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Book Summary :

In this romantic dramedy from the author of Alex, Approximately, a teen girl’s way-too-ordinary life is driven off the beaten path when she’s abandoned in the wilderness with her worst adversary—the boy who broke her heart. Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern day, Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets. But when a group camping trip goes south, Zorie and Lennon find themselves stranded in the wilderness. Alone. Together. What could go wrong? With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But fighting each other while also fighting off the forces of nature makes getting out of the woods in one piece less and less likely. And as the two travel deeper into Northern California’s rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. But can Zorie and Lennon’s rekindled connection survive out in the real world? Or was it just a result of the fresh forest air and the magic of the twinkling stars?

Book Summary :

In 1990, on their third world tour together, photographer Denis O'Regan told David Bowie what inspired him to take up rock photography. "It's because of you,' said Denis, referring to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973 as the turning point. Bowie's response was simple- 'Nah, you'll probably tell Bono the same thing tomorrow night.' In Ricochet- Bowie 1983, the official photographer of one of the most celebrated musicians of all-time reveals intimate stories and pictures that offer an exclusive insight into who Bowie was. Taken on the 'Serious Moonlight Tour' - Bowie's largest ever tour that took in 99 concerts in over 60 cities - Denis's photos provide a thrilling, never-before-seen glimpse into life on the road with a truly unique pop icon. From capturing the theatre and mime of Bowie on-stage to unguarded snapshots of the artist at his most human, every single image in Ricochetwas personally approved by Bowie himself, and the result is a music photography book like no other. Witty, poignant, and beautifully produced, Ricochetis a rare and spirited look into the life of an inimitable artist, whose music and performances have inspired - and continue to inspire - generations of listeners around the world.

When they return to her historical New England hometown years later to run the family bookstore, Josie knows it’s not forever. Her dreams are on the opposite coast, and she has a plan to get there. What she doesn’t plan for is a run-in with the town bad boy, Lucky Karras. Outsider, rebel…and her former childhood best friend.
