An instant New York Times bestseller! “Rapinoe's 'signature pose' from the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is synonymous to the feeling we got when finishing this book: heart full, arms wide and ready to take up space in this world.”—USA Today Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, reveals for the first time her life both on and off the field. Guided by her personal journey into social justice, brimming with humor, humanity, and joy, she urges all of us to ask ourselves, What will you do with your one life? Only four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball, Megan Rapinoe developed a love – and clear talent – for the game at a young age. But it was her parents who taught her that winning was much less important than how she lived her life. From childhood on, Rapinoe always did what she could to stand up for what was right—even if it meant going up against people who disagreed. In One Life, Megan Rapinoe invites readers on a remarkable journey, looking back on both her victories and her failures, and pulls back the curtain on events we know only from the headlines. After the 2011 World Cup, discouraged by how few athletes were open about their sexuality, Rapinoe decided to come out publicly as gay and use her platform to advocate for marriage equality. Recognizing the power she had to bring attention to critical issues, in 2016 she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to protest racial injustice and police brutality—the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn’t compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of change. Here for the first time, Rapinoe reflects upon some of the most pivotal moments in her life and career – from her realization in college that she was gay, through the disputes with soccer coaches and officials over her decision to kneel, to the first time she met her now-fiancé WNBA champion Sue Bird, and up through suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay. Throughout, Rapinoe makes clear the obligation we all have to speak up, and the impact each of us can have on our communities. Deeply personal and inspiring, One Life reveals that real, concrete change lies within all of us, and asks: If we all have the same resource—this one precious life, made up of the decisions we make every day—what are you going to do? "One Life makes it clear that Rapinoe’s greatest accomplishments may ultimately come away from the soccer pitch. She’s a new kind of American hero."—San Francisco Chronicle

These fifty fresh devotional readings cover many of the major issues of life and faith that students wrestle with today. Sexual purity, the pressure to compromise, family relationships, trusting God, servanthood, worry, fatigue, and daily surrender are just a few of the topics Burns explores. Scripture and personal application questions are integrated throughout, while historical and contemporary stories, quotes, profiles of courage, and even illustrations from children's literature help students relate these concepts to their lives. Youth leaders and parents will find this a tremendous resource for teaching, while young adults will enjoy the book for use in their personal quiet time.

Within her pain and loneliness, Nancy found the passion, humour and courage to speak out against the bureaucrats who wrenched her from her mother aged 13 months. This unique book starkly contrasts Nancy's story with that of those bureaucrats, holding them accountable. 'It must never happen again', she said. But it does. Are we ready to listen, to bear witness?

This hauntingly lovely tale parallels the journey of two people with that of a young dog. The victim of a puppy mill has seized an auspicious moment to escape his cage. Similarly, a gifted artist, Mariana Falla, has fled the constraints of the communist regime in Cuba shortly after the revolution. Daniel Sullivan, once a dedicated veterinarian, likewise has broken free from a web of despair. Having discovered that someone deliberately set fire to his clinic, he has lost faith in humanity. The author delves into the mind and heart of the small dog. She puts into words his imagined thoughts and feelings during his lonely trek through a deep and ever-winding ravine and his climb up into the daunting Adirondack Mountains. Despite the bitter cold and blasting Nordic wind, there is a magic weaved through nature, a beauty which guides and leads as the story unfolds. The same principle acts upon Mariana and Daniel as they together search for the lost dog. They are not without guides, however. Virginia Goia, a middle-aged woman who manages the village animal shelter, befriends them. She encourages Mariana in her search for the lost dog, and she supports the latter's efforts to close down the puppy mill. Also, Virginia listens to Daniel's heart and inspires hope in him. The runaway dog has a guide as well. A little dog suddenly enters his life. This stranger is radiant, as though of fairy dust, and is elusive.

What is the “Christian life” all about? Studying the Bible, attending church, cultivating a prayer life, witnessing to others—those are all good. But is that really what Jesus has in mind? The answer, says Scot McKnight in One.Life, lies in Jesus’ words, “Follow me.” What does it look like to follow Jesus, and how will doing so change the way we live our life—our love.life, our justice.life, our peace.life, our community.life, our sex.life—everything about our life. One.Life will open your eyes to the full, compelling immensity of what it means to be a Christian. “Jesus offers to us a kingdom dream that transforms us to the very core of our being,” says Scot McKnight. “His vision is so big we are called to give our entire life to it. His vision is so big it swallows up our dreams.” Discover exactly what Jesus meant when he announced the arrival of God’s kingdom. Equipping you with a new understanding of that kingdom’s radical nature, One.Life shares profound, challenging, and practical insights on how to demonstrate its reality in your life. In many ways, what The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer challenged Christians to do in earlier generations, One.Life will do for a new generation. One.Life will call you beyond the flatlands of religiosity toward a kingdom vision that will shape everything you do.

In 2005, award-winning writer Richard Wagamese moved with his partner to a cabin outside Kamloops, B.C. In the crisp mountain air Wagamese felt a peace he'd seldom known before. Abused and abandoned as a kid, he'd grown up feeling there was nowhere he belonged. For years, only alcohol and moves from town to town seemed to ease the pain. In One Native Life, Wagamese looks back down the road he has travelled in reclaiming his identity and talks about the things he has learned as a human being, a man and an Ojibway in his fifty-two years. Whether he's writing about playing baseball, running away with the circus, attending a sacred bundle ceremony or meeting Pierre Trudeau, he tells these stories in a healing spirit. Through them, Wagamese celebrates the learning journey his life has been. Free of rhetoric and anger despite the horrors he has faced, Wagamese's prose resonates with a peace that has come from acceptance. Acceptance is an Aboriginal principle, and he has come to see that we are all neighbours here. One Native Life is his tribute to the people, the places and the events that have allowed him to stand in the sunshine and celebrate being alive.

One Life on Earth is the autobiography of a young woman whose life has been marked by tragedy, loss, and hardship. Her brother was shot, her father died, her family lost their home, she lost a child, she suffered burnout, and she was near death three times. But this is also a story of perseverance and victory. After recounting her story, Fran Bosa explains what she has learned and where she has learned it. This book includes excerpts from the writings of Rick Warren, Joyce Meyer, Beth Moore, and other Christian leaders, whose words have encouraged and blessed Bosa and molded her into the woman she is today. As Fran explains, we are all on a journey, and there are two paths we can choose. After some detours and false starts, Fran chose the path less traveled, the one that leads to eternal peace and joy.

“Stark . . . the story of how one falsely accused convict and his fellow prisoners survived or perished in an arctic slave labor camp after the war.”—Time From the icy blast of reveille through the sweet release of sleep, Ivan Denisovich endures. A common carpenter, he is one of millions viciously imprisoned for countless years on baseless charges, sentenced to the waking nightmare of the Soviet work camps in Siberia. Even in the face of degrading hatred, where life is reduced to a bowl of gruel and a rare cigarette, hope and dignity prevail. This powerful novel of fact is a scathing indictment of Communist tyranny, and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit. The prodigious works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, including his acclaimed The Gulag Archipelago, have secured his place in the great tradition of Russian literary giants. Ironically, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is the only one of his works permitted publication in his native land. Praise for One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich “Cannot fail to arouse bitterness and pain in the heart of the reader. A literary and political event of the first magnitude.”—New Statesman “Both as a political tract and as a literary work, it is in the Doctor Zhivago category.”—Washington Post “Dramatic . . . outspoken . . . graphically detailed . . . a moving human record.”—Library Journal

Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy Volume XXIV 2008 Book PDF/Epub Download

This volume contains papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the academic year 2007-8. The papers discuss a wide range of topics related to Plato and Aristotle. On Plato, topics include false pleasures in the "Philebus," the tripartite soul in the "Republic," and rhetoric in the "Phaedrus," and on Aristotle, the relation of the physical and psychological in "De Anima," of virtue and happiness in the "Ethics," of body and nature in the "Physics," and the role of pros hen in the "Metaphysics." One other paper argues for the Aristotelian origin of Stoic determinism.
