In the tradition of Every Soul a Star and Inside Out & Back Again, Just Like Me is a funny, uplifting summer camp story about unlikely friendships and finding your place in the world from the award-winning author of This Journal Belongs to Ratchet. Who eats Cheetos with chopsticks?! Avery and Becca, my "Chinese Sisters," that's who. We're not really sisters-we were just adopted from the same orphanage. And we're nothing alike. They like egg rolls, and I like pizza. They're wave around Chinese fans, and I pretend like I don't know them. Which is not easy since we're all going to summer camp to "bond." (Thanks, Mom.) To make everything worse, we have to journal about our time at camp so the adoption agency can do some kind of "where are they now" newsletter. I'll tell you where I am: At Camp Little Big Lake in a cabin with five other girls who aren't getting along, competing for a camp trophy and losing (badly), wondering how I got here...and where I belong. Told through a mix of traditional narrative and journal entries, don't miss this funny, surprisingly sweet summer read! "A tender and honest story about a girl trying to find her place in the world, and the thread that connects us all." -Liesl Shurtliff, Author of Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin "A heartwarming story about the universal struggle of yearning to be an individual while longing to fit in."-Karen Harrington, author of Sure Kinds of Crazy

Just Like Me: Beyond the Thousand-Yard Stare contains battle scenes as vivid as those in a Tom Hanks movie and psychic twists and turns reminiscent of Hitchcock. Don Duncan, retired journalist and World War II army veteran Just Like Me is an exciting, riveting read. It will do much to further the understanding of the emotional turmoil resulting from war. Carol Lodmell, retired educator This open and honest story is, I like to think, a freeing of some of Archie Morrison's demons into the etherto dilution and impotence. I like to think, too, that in its expression of hopeman seeking something much better than the worst he can do to others (and himself)it helps express not just Archie's aspirations, but ours as well. Richard Prince, retired dentist and Vietnam navy veteran Archie Morrison creates an account of an unbelievable friendship that becomes believable when we see that it is built on truths that war diminishes but does not extinguish. Denzil Walters, retired teacher and editor; World War II navy veteran

You Can t be Mexican You Talk Just Like Me Book PDF/Epub Download

A firsthand account of the immigrant experience in America Frank Mendez, a child of Mexican immigrants begins his memoir with the story of his father's harrowing migration from Mexico to Texas in 1920 as he escaped from Zapata's guerrrillos and continues with his story of growing up in northeast Ohio. He recounts the Mendez family's experience with the Depression, living in the Lorain, Ohio barrio, labor issues, racism, and World War II. Mendez dropped out of high school in 1943 and enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served twenty-two months in the Pacific theatre. When he returned to Lorain, he received his high school diploma, bachelor's and master's degrees, and a professional engineering license. With an easy, engaging style, Mendez deals directly with the matter of personal identity, addressing the issues that confronted him as he tried to sort out his sometimes conflicting Mexican and American heritage. You Can't Be Mexican comments on the social and political issues of the twentieth century and will appeal to those interested in immigrant studies and ethnicity studies and modern social history. " Every immigrant group which has ever come to this country has its own story to tell. Many of the stories have common threads, however, and Mendez's detailed recollection of the personalities, the emotions, the disappointments and joys relate to the understanding that this is a country of immigrants, whose experience is woven into a shared culture. I know others will enjoy this book as much as I did."--Ambler H. Moss Jr., Professor of International Studies, University of Miami (former U.S. Ambassador to Panama, 1978- 1982)

You know how people always say, "I should have written that down" when they hear something funny or smart while they are at work, at a party, at home, or any old place. Well, Montana bartender Mike Muri did it. He actually did it, yeah he wrote down what people said. He would grab a pen or pencil and any piece of paper available and write down what they said, followed by their first name and the date. He collected bags of these quotations, and now he finally has put them into a book. Some of them are witty, some profound, some puzzling, but almost all of them make you laugh. It's just ordinary folks talking in ordinary language and saying extraordinary things. Some of them were overheard in bars where Muri has worked the last 30 years, but others were said over the dinner table, at the supermarket, or in recovery. They cover every topic of interest to mankind, be it philosophy, religion, sex, death, government, love, politics, bad habits, good deeds, you name it. The title of the book comes from an afternoon when Mike and "the Gov" were sitting in the bar trading stories. Both men would tell a story, chortling at their own wit, and then impatiently waiting for the other person to finish his story, so they could get back to hearing themselves talk. At some point, the Gov, who is now deceased, grinned as he said, "You know, you're just like me. If it ain't about you, you don't care. And if you didn't say it, it ain't funny." Ironically, this Montana bartender actually listened, laughed and recorded what people had said throughout his life. A friend, upon hearing some of these quotes told him, "You really must share these with the world."
