". . . author Sarah Andersen uses hilarious (and adorable) comics to illustrate the very specific growing pains that occur on your way to becoming a mature, put-together grownup. Andersen’s spot-on illustrations also show how to navigate this newfound adulthood once you arrive, since maturity is equally as hard to maintain as it is to find … " --The Huffington Post Sarah valiantly struggles with waking up in the morning, being productive, and dealing with social situations. Sarah's Scribbles is the comic strip that follows her life, finding humor in living as an adulting introvert that is at times weird, awkward, and embarrassing. The third collection of Sarah's Scribbles comics includes never-before-published comics and an illustrated essay about struggles with sexism, personal growth, and the rewards and challenges of sharing your creative work with millions of readers online.

In The Politics of Herding Cats, John Lovett looks at the relationship between media, Congress, and public policy, showing that leaders in Congress under normal circumstances control public policy on issue areas due to their status both within Congress and in the media by and large. When issue coverage on topics increases in media, however, other members seize on the opportunities to engage in the issue and shift public policy away from leader desires. As more members engage and more groups become involved, leaders lose the ability to control the process and are more likely to have problems actually getting public policy enacted. Lovett look at this phenomenon using newspaper coverage in the Washington Post over a 40-year period, both in terms of general analysis as well as individual case studies exploring agricultural subsidies (a low coverage topic), immigration (a changing coverage topic), and health care (a high coverage topic). As coverage increases, the amount leaders can control in the process decreases. Only under extreme circumstances, as seen in the Affordable Care Act, can leaders get anything done at all. The Politics of Herding Cats would be useful for those who wish to better understand the relationship between the media and Congress. It will also be useful to those who want to understand the relationship between actors in government and how the media has influenced American politics, as well as how individual members of Congress can go against party leaders on major issues.

One of the top marketing challenges that marketing managers and executives face today is to better understand social media and its promise as a marketing platform. The social media ecosystem, including traditional platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and upstarts such as Instagram and Snapchat, have evolved significantly over the past 10 years; so much so that keeping pace with the latest social media platforms can seem like herding cats. Inside, the authors provide a timeless perspective on how to create, manage, and measure social media content to help you craft a more strategic approach to your social media efforts. They simplify the concept of branding and advertising (fueled by social media) so you can focus on fostering customer engagement; craft your organization’s unique story; tell that story strategically via social media channels; organize, manage, monitor, and measure those efforts; identify key metrics and measure the performance through analytics; and understand the extent of change brought on by digital and social media related to how you engage your customers.

The language of genes has become common parlance. We know they make your eyes blue, your hair curly or your nose straight. The media tells us that our genes control the risk of cancer, heart disease, alcoholism or Alzheimer's. The cost of DNA sequencing has plummeted from billions of pounds to a few hundred, and gene-based advances in medicine hold huge promise. So we've all heard of genes, but how do they actually work? There are 2.2 metres of DNA inside every one of your cells, encoding roughly 20,000 genes. These are the 'recipes' that tell our cells how to make the building blocks of life, along with myriad control switches ensuring they're turned on and off at the right time and in the right place. But rather than a static string of genetic code, this is a dynamic, writhing biological library. Figuring out how it all works – how your genes build your body – is a major challenge for researchers around the world. And what they're discovering is that far from genes being a fixed, deterministic blueprint, things are much more random and wobbly than anyone expected. Drawing on stories ranging from six toed cats and stickleback hips to Mickey Mouse mice and zombie genes – told by researchers working at the cutting edge of genetics – Kat Arney explores the mysteries in our genomes with clarity, flair and wit, creating a companion reader to the book of life itself.

More "hi-octane hi-jinx" from the author of Big Spender and Stickleback. In a small town in the south west of England, rivals of a large business are being brutally dealt with one by one. Enter Tim Power, hotshot advertiser, whose girlfriend has placed him on a strict 12-month relationship test. Caught in a commercial war between two low-grade meat producers, Tim discovers that bad advertising can be every bit as effective as good advertising, provided you don't mind upsetting violent psychopaths with dubious family histories. Worse than this, Tim finds to his cost that failing in a relationship can be even more harmful to your health than accidentally offending tyrants with a passion for meat grinding.

Cats of course, won't be herded. And the most successful organizations in the 21st Century won't be managed -- they'll be led. The answer to America's current leadership crisis is leaders (not managers) who recognize that "the only capital that really counts is human capital" And whether readers are looking for a leader or looking to be a better one, Warren knows what it takes. In answer to the leadership crisis, Bennis offers insight into developing leaders and their competencies, by explaining ten traits of dynamic leaders, and how these leaders constantly reinvent themselves. The 21st century will require leaders who can inspire and orchestrate change rather than impose it or simply react to it. The section on "Leading Change" will, in itself, make this a must-have book.

Managing The Professional Service Firm Book PDF/Epub Download

Professional service firms differ from other business enterprises in two distinct ways: first they provide highly customised services thus cannot apply many of the management principles developed for product-based industries. Second, professional services are highly personalised, involving the skills of individuals. Such firms must therefore compete not only for clients but also for talented professionals. Drawing on more than ten years of research and consulting to these unique and creative companies, David Maister explores issues ranging from marketing and business development to multinational strategies, human resources policies to profit improvement, strategic planning to effective leadership. While these issues can be complex, Maister simplifies them by recognising that 'every professional service firm in the world, regardless of size, specific profession, or country of operation, has the same mission statement: outstanding service to clients, satisfying careers for its people and financial success for its owners.'

One brave feline, exiled from her clan, must fight to survive in this PEN Award–winning author’s epic fantasy adventure about a tribe of prehistoric cats. Twenty-five million years in the past, a clan of sentient, prehistoric big cats called “the Named” have their own language, traditions, and law. Led by Meoran, the Named herd horses and deer for food. They keep order and peace, fending off predatory raiders—the UnNamed—from all sides. But, the battle has taken its toll, and the Named are skirting the edge of survival. Much to the displeasure of Meoran, a young female named Ratha discovers a powerful defense against the UnNamed. She calls it “the Red Tongue,” and it is a creature of incredible power. Red Tongue is fire, a force of both life and destruction that must be at once nurtured and tamed. Sensing that Ratha’s mastery of fire threatens his power, Meoran banishes her from the clan. As she travels out amongst the savage UnNamed, Ratha learns about both them and herself. But, her tribe needs her. Can she return? Will the Named survive constant attacks without the Red Tongue? Will the power of the Red Tongue change the clan forever? Acclaimed author Clare Bell crafts a serious coming-of-age story filled with adventure, triumph, and heartbreak. Perfect for readers of Jean M. Auel’s The Clan of the Cave Bear, Ratha’s Creature will have readers hooked and clamoring for more stories of these big, noble cats.
