This study centres on the fiction of the New Zealand writer Yvonne du Fresne, the descendant of Danish and Danish-Huguenot families who emigrated to New Zealand in the late-nineteenth century and settled in the Manawatu area. It explores how memories of the past haunt generations of immigrants, and how issues of language, politics, and social norms live on through generations, affecting the formation of new identities and homes. Is it only, as with Astrid in Motherland, that by returning to our roots we can finally feel that we are at home in more than one country? As Lauris Edmond writes, du Fresne¿s work is a tapestry of the past and present, storying immigrant life. Flitting in and out of the past is shown to be one way of coming to terms with the present and of understanding the importance of home, as is evident in The Book of Ester and Frédérique, both centering on the manifold, complex European cultural traditions that were often overlooked in settler countries. Another is to be an inquisitive spy on the land like the child narrator, Astrid Westergaard, in du Fresne¿s magnificent stories, many of them originally radio broadcasts, which depict life in a small Danish community in the Manawatu in the 1930s, often in a humorous and ironic manner. Through her portrayal of fictional Scandinavian immigrants, du Fresne throws light on a relatively neglected area in New Zealand studies. Reading her writing against its reception shows how it raises issues of cultural colonization, stereotyping, and difference; the consequences of migration and exile taken up are, however, equally relevant in our global society of today, and expressive of transculturation in the globalized present. Anne Holden Rønning has retired from the University of Bergen, Norway. Her research interests and fields of publication are women¿s studies, and postcolonial literatures and cultures, especially those of Australia and New Zealand.

Immigrants in the Sexual Revolution Book PDF/Epub Download

This book focuses on the latter half of the twentieth century, when much of northwest Europe grew increasingly multicultural with the arrival of foreign workers and (post-)colonial migrants, whilst simultaneously experiencing a boom in feminist and sexual liberation activism. Using multilingual newspapers, foreign worker organizations’ archives, and interviews, this book shows that immigrants in the Netherlands and Denmark held a variety of viewpoints about European gender and sexual cultures. Some immigrants felt solidarity with, and even participated in, European social movements that changed norms and laws in favor of women’s equality, gay and lesbian rights, and sexual liberation. These histories challenge today’s politicians and journalists who strategically link immigration to sexual conservatism, misogyny, and homophobia.

This second open access book in a series of three volumes examines the repertoire of policies and programmes led by EU Member States to engage with their nationals residing abroad. Focusing on sending states’ engagement in the area of social protection, this book shows how a series of emigration-related policies that go beyond the realm of social security address the needs of nationals abroad in the area of health care, unemployment, family benefits, pensions and economic hardship. In addition, this volume highlights the variety of sending states’ institutions that are involved in these policies (consulates, diaspora institutions, ministries, agencies...) and their engagement with citizens abroad in other policy areas such as electoral rights, citizenship, language, culture, education, business or religion. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, policy makers, government employees and NGO’s.

Making History Book PDF/Epub Download

&‘Men no longer whisper &“Revolution&”, they shout it; and they no longer carry banners, but throw bricks' &– Letter home from Harvard, 1970.Jock Phillips grew up in post-war Christchurch where history meant Ancient Greece and home was England. Over the last 50 years &– through the Maori renaissance, the women's movement, the rediscovery of ANZAC and more &– Phillips has lived through a revolution in New Zealanders' understanding of their identity. And from A Man's Country to Te Ara, in popular writing, exhibitions, television and the internet, he played a key role in instigating that revolution. Making History tells the story of how Jock Phillips and other New Zealanders discovered this country's past.In this memoir, Phillips turns his deep historical skills on himself. How did the son of Anglophile parents, educated among the sons of Canterbury sheep farmers at Christ's College, work out that the history of this country might have real value? From Harvard, Black Power and sexual politics in America, to challenging male culture in New Zealand in A Man's Country, to engaging with Maori in Te Papa and Te Ara, Phillips revolted against his background and became a pioneering public historian, using new ways to communicate history to a broad audience.

Minding the Gap Book PDF/Epub Download

"Passengers on the British railway and underground must 'mind the gap'because it's dangerous not to. In a state of embarking or disembarking, passengers must stay aware of the small but significant space separating the stationary from the moving. The contemporary practices of writing and reading are in constant motion, and the phrase 'mind the gap'captures an essential aspect of the way language and literature progress as they pass through any number of social, technical, and political exchanges. 'Minding the gap'also suggests an awareness of the always shifting distance between the expected and the unexpected, the ordinary and the impossible, the familiar and unimagined. This book includes chapters on writing non-fiction, media and genre, and also addresses elements of identity, culture and linguistics in fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction as contributors consider the gaps that exist between the self as writer, as reader and as editor or mentor. The volume adopts the following key themes: new gaps for creative writing in the academy; writing in new genres, media and forms; exploring the creative process and narrative strategies across disciplines. This book will be of international appeal to all readers interested in the changing landscape of creative writing"--EbscoHost.

Talent Competitiveness and Migration Book PDF/Epub Download

As the global economic crisis ripples across the financial, political and social landscape, it is leaving its mark on international migration. The recession, hailed as the worst since the Great Depression, is impacting the scope and pace of international migration and its effects could deepen should the world economy worsen. Governments, businesses and individuals have all felt the damaging consequences of the global downturn, which has shaken confidence in established institutions. The crisis is driving some policymakers and analysts in Europe and North America to re-think their assumptions about labor migration. Yet while policymakers face exceptionally strong popular and political outcry to protect jobs at home, they face mid-term demographic challenges. These two opposing policy pressures require responses that will not only help ease the current economic crisis, but will also secure the long-term prosperity of these regions. This book reflects the effort of the Transatlantic Council on Migration to map how profound demographic change is likely to affect the size and character of global migration flows; and how governments can shape immigration policy in a world increasingly attuned to the hunt for talent. This volume is the second major product of the Council. The Council was launched in 2008 as a new initiative of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) in Washington, DC. The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the European Policy Centre are the Council's policy partners.

This volume examines the ways different countries around the world have responded to rising numbers of mobile citizens. Complete with detailed case studies, it provides a groundbreaking and global analysis of emigration and diaspora policies in the 21st century. First, an introduction considers factors that determines a state’s policy choices. It draws on rich empirical material to present readers with information on the determinants of policy definition and implementation, reactions to emigration, and converging and diverging trends. Next, the volume offers detailed case studies from 15 countries around the world, including Argentia, Vietnam, Senegal, the Russian Federation, Denmark, and Turkey. Coverage for each country critically analyzes its emigration or diaspora policies as well as how these policies affect its mobile citizens. The contributors also place the policies in context and explore the consequences of pertinent rules and provisions. In addition, a conclusion presents a comparative analysis of all case studies as well as details a set of best practices.Emigration and immigration are two sides of the same coin that every country experiences and, in one way or the other, must face. This book offers readers a new look on diaspora and emigration governance across the globe and explores the future paradigm of reactions to emigration.

For many years New Zealand was stereotyped as a sleepy hollow of the South Pacific, but more recently, it has had an influence in international affairs which belies its size. Noted more for its conservatism and stability, its green fields and sheep, than for its innovation and radicalism, this most geographically isolated of English-speaking countries took pride in its role as a provider of agricultural produce for Europe.

A New Life Book PDF/Epub Download

"In letters to their homeland, Danes who emigrated to North America from 1842 to 1946 here give vivid, personal impressions of how they began life anew, far from the familiar surroundings of home. Passages selected by the authors from among more than a thousand emigrant letters provide a unique glimpse of life on the American prairie as well as on Chicago's notorious South Side. The narratives are presented in a series of themes, ranging from the crossing of the Atlantic to an inside look at the United States. Although few regretted the decision to emigrate, nearly all suffered pangs of homesickness, and many attempted to imbue their children with a sense of "Danishness." These Danes of the past come alive as they describe both successes and failures in their own words. It is the hope of the Danes Worldwide Archives that "A New Life" will help to strengthen the historical identity of Danish-Americans"--Back cover.
